THIS SALE HAS CLOSED. We present it here as a record of our services. The April 28 and 29 weekend sale features the estates of Josephine Spaulding, Helena, and Ellen Johanson, Missoula and Helena. Two remarkable Montana women with different interests shared a love of the written word, and this sale offers hundreds of wonderful books.

Rare Helena-area photographs, postcards and stereo cards, early Montana books, hand-made 19th century marbles, a classic MGB touring car, hundreds of quality tools, glass, dishes, and more will be sold.

The Spaulding family is descended from Montana pioneers. The history of the family is linked to Helena’s early years. E.H. Train was Helena’s second photographer, running a studio from the late 1860s to the mid 1870s, and the estate sale includes a half dozen of his rare 1870s stereo cards of the Prickly Pear Canyon and an early mining camp from the family’s collection. There’s also a cabinet card of Brother Van as a young man, taken by Train’s 1870s partner O.C. Bundy. Great Uncle Homer, born in 1882, accumulated a great collection of 19th Century hand-made marbles, Bennington, peppermint swirl and clambroth. A vintage Felix figure, Case XX carving set, compo poker chips, and Underwood #5 typewriter add to the eclectic offering. There are a hundred-plus volumes of Montana books and magazines, new and old (including a rare copy of the first Montana Magazine of Western History), and dozens of Polk directories (including vintage HHS and U of M yearbooks).

On the more modern front, the sale features a beautiful red 1978 MGB Touring car, with only 38K original miles. It buzzes like a bumble bee and runs like a champ.
